Laura Callegaro
Laura Callegaro is a London-based independent curator, archivist, and writer. Her curatorial research investigates the use and contextualisation of language, its aesthetic, performative aspects, and its potential forms of resistance in the neoliberal scenarios of today. She is particularly interested in the creation of inclusive and safe communities through site-specific interventions, performative and sound practices, whilst amplifying intersectional feminist and anti-capitalist perspectives. She also co-founded trans-curatorial, a collective that establishes a framework for critical thinking, research, and exhibition-making.
Selected group shows Laura curated in most recent years are SOFTCORE (2022) in Koppel X gallery in Piccadilly Circus, while through trans-curatorial – and supported by Arts Council England – Hold On at The Koppel Project Central gallery in Soho (2020) and Meatspace at The Koppel Project Hive gallery in Holborn (2021), London.
Recently, she has focused on her critical writing practice; her new article “Like Herding Cats: on the Feminine and the Feral”investigates the links between western cultural perception of cats and women, looking at how today's semantics are affected by patriarchal norms. Going back to the roots of this association, Laura revisits historical topics such as witch hunts and the capitalist advent in the early modern era, while touching on the politics of love, emotional care, labour, and affection. The article will be published in the third issue of VEC magazine (2025, forthcoming).
In parallel, through her archival practice, Laura develops research related to subjects such as decoloniality, diversity, gender and ecological matters working with contemporary artists and their estates. She has collaborated on archival projects along with institutions such as Art360 Foundation, DACS and The Showroom Gallery, October Gallery and Aubrey Williams Estate.
Laura holds an MA in Curating and Collections at Chelsea College of Arts UAL (2018, UK) and a BA in Visual Arts and Theatre at IUAV University of Venice (2016, IT).Since 2015, she has worked within international art institutions: as Programme Manager at The Koppel Project (London, UK), Performer, Artist’s Assistant and Cultural Mediator at the Venice Biennale (Venice, IT), Assistant Curator in galleries such as Chelsea Space, Flat Time House (London, UK), and A plus A Gallery (Venice, IT), as well as Course Support Coordinator at Central Saint Martins UAL (UK).
