Ferenc Domokos
Ferenc Domokos is a curator and art worker from Romania (b. 2000, Târgu Mureș), currently based in Budapest and working across Central and Eastern Europe. His curatorial practice responds to local contexts and frequently develops site-specific approaches. He is particularly interested in socially engaged art addressing issues of sustainability – whether economic, environmental, or social – as well as metanarratives, institutional critique, and practices exploring questions of mediality. He has written numerous exhibition texts and reviews, while his research has focused on art accessibility and education, humour, and, most extensively, self-organising institutions. His research into the latter has examined the motivations and tactics of almost thirty initiatives across Romania and Hungary, proposing to understand these as alternative rather than independent.
Domokos holds a BSc in Economics from Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca and two MA degrees: in Curating and Contemporary Art Theory from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, and in Art Management from Budapest Metropolitan University, where he is an external lecturer. He is currently attending a course on Self-Organisation in Contemporary Art at the University of Gothenburg. Alongside his experience working at commercial galleries, he has primarily developed long-term collaborations with alternative institutions, including Aluvial project space in Cluj, B5 Studio artist-run space in Târgu Mureș, Romania, and Patika Gallery in Budapest. In 2025, he also co-founded bázis., an artist-run exhibition and studio space in Budapest.
